Nottingham stabbing victim's mum will 'never forgive' cop after watching son die on video

The mother of a student stabbed to death in a triple-killing last June said she will “never forgive” the police officer who snooped on bodycam footage of her son’s dying moments.

Barnaby Webber died after being knifed to death by Valdo Calocane in Nottingham in June 2023. His mother Emma Webber received a letter from Nottingham Police informing her that a special constable had been sacked for viewing footage on his laptop of Barnaby being treated by medics – despite having no reason to.

Emma Webber told LBC: “The police have finally given us details yesterday, because we asked the chief constable and we got a letter last night containing details because we’ve heard lots of varying versions of it.

“We’ve had an apology for us not being informed in advance, and then we had the detail of how seriously they take this, and officers are specially trained, lessons will be learnt.

“But that doesn’t really help with the pain of knowing that people were viewing the bodycam footage of my son in the street and I will never forgive them for that.”

The bodycam footage also showed Grace O’Malley-Kumar’s final moments. Another officer, PC Matthew Gell, was given a warning after sharing information about the case via text message.

Valdo Calocane is set to have his sentence reviewed after concerns it was “unduly lenient” following the triple murder.

The Attorney General has asked judges whether the term can be increased. Under the current order, he could be released if his mental health improves and the Justice Secretary and doctors believe he is no longer a risk to the public.

The families of the victims previously said how they felt Calocane had “got away with murder” after he was given a hospital order after admitting manslaughter.

In a joint statement, they said: “We were very glad to hear that the Attorney General has agreed with us that the sentencing given to Valdo Calocane, who so viciously and calculatedly killed our loved ones, was wrong.

“We are optimistic that when this reaches the Royal Courts of Justice for its appeal there will be an outcome that provides some of the appropriate justice that we have been calling for.

“It is important to remember that this is just one part of the tragic failures in this case. The investigation into the mental health trust, the CPS and the Nottingham and Leicestershire Police still continue.

“We maintain that there are serious failures in all three agencies that must be fully addressed.”
