'No country club prison': Trump facing 'violent' Georgia state penitentiary if convicted

Donald Trump doesn’t have the option of a country club-style federal prison if he’s convicted in Georgia, a former federal prosecutor has exclusively told Daily Express US.

Instead, the former president would likely be housed in a Georgia state prison alongside inmates convicted of violent crimes such as murder and rape.

“It wouldn’t be a federal facility it would be Georgia state prison. State crimes tend to be more violent crimes,” former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told Daily Express US.

However, the conviction of a former president is unprecedented and Mr Rahmani believes Trump would almost certainly be kept separate from other inmates were such a scenario to materialise.

He said: “He would be separated from the general population. Everything would be historic but I don’t think it would be a walk in the park by any means for Donald Trump.”

It’s also likely the former president – who like all others has been afforded lifetime protection by the Secret Service – would be given 24/7 protection in jail but it seems no one knows how this would work.

“I don’t know how [Secret Service protection] would work in prison. It’s just bizarre. Procedurally I have no idea how it’s going to work and I don’t think even the secret service or the Georgia state prison system would know how it would work,” Mr Rahmani added.

Trump has been charged by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for what prosecutors say was a wide-ranging scheme to reverse the results of the 2020 election.

The indictment contains 13 counts against Trump, who is charged alongside 18 allies.

Charges include forgery and racketeering which are most often used to target organised criminal groups.

Trump has branded the allegations a “Witch Hunt” and has been given until August 25 to surrender to the court when he will be fingerprinted and likely have his mugshot taken.

DA Willis has said she hopes to begin a trial in the next six months, something which Mr Rahmani said wasn’t likely due to the scope of the case.
