Newlywed dies just two months after Spanish villa carbon monoxide leak killed her husband

Mary Somerville, 39, was found unconscious alongside her husband, Jaime Carsi, 40, in a villa in Majorca on May 6 due to a carbon monoxide leak. The leak is believed to have been caused by a broken fridge in their holiday accommodation.

The couple, who lived in Edinburgh, had celebrated their wedding with friends and family just 15 days before the tragedy occurred.

Mary, a yoga teacher, fought for her life in hospital for several weeks but succumbed to her injuries on July 2 at St Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh. Her funeral will be held at Inverness Crematorium.

Friends of Mary have expressed their grief and paid tribute to her.

Sujata Sriram, a close friend, said: “Mary Somerville, you are dearly missed. Your radiance and sparkle, the soulful pitch of your voice, your joyful laughter.

“The fun times we had are now in the currency of precious memories. A treasure – your selfless service to humanity with enthusiasm, unbounded energy and love…along with your life partner Jaime Carsi who is also no longer in our midst!

“Even as I pray for you both, I remain in disbelief. I was so fortunate to have met you on my Art of Living journey.”

Iain Stewart, Executive Director of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association said: “It pains me to share this deeply heart breaking news. My good friend and friend of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association Mary Somerville sadly passed away.

“Many people will know Mary through her role as a teacher in the Art of Living. I will remember Mary for her warm and infectious personality and smile that would light up any room.

“Please join me in sending prayers to Mary’s family and loved ones. At this time as people of faith we are comforted by the belief that Mary will once again be united with her beloved Jaime.”

The tragic incident came to light when friends of the newlyweds alerted the police after the couple failed to join them for a planned boating trip.

Emergency services rushed to the rural property in Cala Mesquida, where they discovered Jaime deceased and Mary barely breathing.

An autopsy confirmed Jaime had died from carbon monoxide poisoning. The Guardia Civil later determined the leak was caused by a malfunctioning refrigerator.

Mary, a former Lloyds bank worker, dedicated her life to teaching yoga and breathwork. She worked as a breathwork instructor at the non-profit Art of Living Foundation in Edinburgh, helping individuals alleviate stress and anxiety through breathing techniques and meditation.

Jaime, originally believed to be from Madrid, had moved to the UK with his parents during his childhood. Approximately six years ago, he relocated to Edinburgh and began working as an investment risk analyst at Baillie Gifford after spending several years in London.
