New York fire: Black smoke pours out of huge skyscraper metres from Ground Zero

Thick black smoke has been billowing from a hug skyscraped in New York’s Financial District.

The under-construction residential building – 125 Greenwich Street – is located a short walk from Ground Zero in lower Manhattan

A helicopter could be seen circling the building at around 9.40am ET, while multiple fire crews and an ambulance are racing to the seen.

Crowds of worried onlookers are at the foot of the building near Liberty Street and Greenwich Street.

The building, a residential skyscraper currently under construction, is located two blocks south of One World Trade Center where the Western Electric building once stood.

Images shot from a nearby building appear to show the smoke is concentrated at the very top of the building.

Daily Express US reporter Falyn Stempler is on the way to the scene.
