New weather maps show UK to be hit with 600-mile wall of heavy rain and high winds

New weather maps show the UK is set to be hit with 600 miles of heavy rain this month, following periods of snow and wintry showers.

WXCharts has forecast a band of rain the length of the country on January 20. This comes after the Met Office predicted snow to arrive in the south of England tomorrow.

Despite being forecast to cover all of the UK, the rain will be heaviest in north Scotland, north England and south England.

There will be temperatures as low as -1C in Scotland, 1C in the midlands and Wales, and 7C in the south of England and Northern Ireland.

Wind gusts will be strongest on the coasts, with high speeds off the coast of west Scotland and northern Ireland.

Met Office five-day forecast

Tonight there will be some wintry showers in the southeast and coastal areas but otherwise a dry and cloudy night. Fog patches will return across Northern Ireland, Scotland and northwest England alongside widespread frost and icy stretches.

Monday and Tuesday will be fine for many with sunny spells in the west after fog clears. There will also be scattered sleet and snow showers across southern areas and wind chill for England and Wales.

Wednesday and Thursday will see high pressure dominating, with overnight frost and fog. It will be dry and bright, turning cloudier in the north and remaining cold with a brisk wind in the south.

Met Office long-range forecast

This weekend it will be mostly cloudy with some patchy light rain or drizzle expected, although many areas will remain dry. Winds will be light with temperatures likely to be a little below average.

Into the start of the following week, it is likely to turn colder as northerly winds begin to develop across of the UK and bring a risk of snow showers, particularly across the north.

There is also a smaller risk of a period of snow across some southern areas. Through the rest of this period confidence is low, but there is an increased chance of more unsettled conditions spreading from the west.
