New Rishi Sunak book by Lord Ashcroft to lift lid on tensions with Boris Johnson

A new book on Rishi Sunak promises to reveal behind-the-scenes details about tensions with Boris Johnson.

An updated version of Tory peer Lord Ashcroft’s biography, titled All To Play For: The Advance of Rishi Sunak, is set to be published by Biteback Publishing next month.

The book was first released in 2020 when Mr Sunak was Chancellor under the title Going for Broke: The Rise of Rishi Sunak.

It charts his rise from an unknown junior minister in mid-2019 to the Treasury and then No 10.

Mr Sunak became Britain’s youngest PM in more than 200 years when he entered Downing Street last October.

A new press release describes Mr Sunak’s rise as “without precedent” as he took on the most powerful job in the country in “chaotic circumstances”.

The book promises to cast “new light” on Mr Sunak’s “tense working relationship” with his former boss.

Mr Sunak was widely blamed by allies of Mr Johnson for his downfall after he was the second in an avalanche of ministers to quit last summer.

In his resignation letter, Mr Sunak said his approach to the economy was “fundamentally too different” to that of Mr Johnson, who was forced out of No 10 soon after.

The book by the businessman and pollster – which is released on September 29 – also explores Mr Sunak’s time at Oxford University, the City of London and Silicon Valley.

The press release said: “It is the story of a clever and hard-working son of immigrant parents who marries an heiress and makes a fortune of his own; a polished southerner who wins over the voters of North Yorkshire; a fiscal conservative who becomes the biggest-spending Chancellor in history; and a fastidious political operator tasked with reuniting the Conservative Party and repairing an economy in flux.

“Casting new light on Sunak’s tense working relationship with his predecessor, Boris Johnson, All to Play For shows what makes him tick ahead of a general election whose outcome will have profound consequences for Britain.”

Lord Ashcroft, a former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, has written 26 other books including biographies on Sir Jacob Rees Mogg, Sir Keir Starmer and Carrie Johnson.
