Neighbour found guilty of murdering mum and kids after setting their home on fire

A man from Nottingham has been found guilty of murdering a neighbouring family of three by setting their flat ablaze. Jamie Barrow, 31, set a fire in the doorway of the flat neighbouring his own last year by pouring petrol through the letterbox and setting light to it while the family inside were fast asleep.

Barrow watched the fire grow before walking off with his dog, leaving Fatoumatta Hydara, and her two daughters Fatimah, 3, and Naeemah, 1, trapped inside.

When he returned to his flat, the emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the fire.

He feigned ignorance and told nobody he had been responsible for the fire.

Barrow eventually admitted he caused the fire and was charged with murder. He pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter and claimed his vile behaviour was influenced by a mental health condition. He told the court he had no intention of harming the mum and her children.

But following a three-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, he was convicted of three counts of murder and one count of arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered. His sentencing will take place on Friday (7 July 2023).
