NATO Summit LIVE: Russia warns of 'appropriate' measures if Sweden joins alliance


Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has branded NATO’s decision to postpone his country’s membership bid “absurd”.

Alliance leaders recently ruled that Ukraine may only join when it meets several conditions, prompting outcry from Mr Zelensky and his administration.

In a speech from a town square in Vilnius, Lithuania, where the organisation is holding its latest summit, the premier said he has faith in NATO, but wanted this to become something more.

He said he would “like this faith to become confidence, confidence in the decisions that we deserve, all of us, every soldier, every citizen, every mother, every child.”

Before heading to the summit, he tweeted: “Is that too much to ask?

“It’s unprecedented and absurd when a time frame is set neither for the invitation nor for Ukraine’s membership.”
