NASA's asteroid samples land on earth in historic first that could reveal our origins

A space capsule carrying NASA’s first asteroid samples has landed back on Earth in a historic first that could reveal human origins.

This marks the end of NASA’s Osiris-Rex mission – for seven years, scientists have been flying to Asteroid Bennu to gather pieces and return them home to be studied by researchers.

Scientists hope the study can help reveal how planets formed and evolved, and even how life itself began.

Asteroid Bennu is around 4.5 billion years old, meaning NASA’s sample is a look back into the solar system during its early years.

NASA said the pieces of the space rock “act as a time capsule from the earliest days of our solar system”.
