Nancy Pelosi says Donald Trump 'threatens destruction of NATO' in ominous election warning

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has warned that Donald Trump poses a threat to both American democracy and the country’s place in NATO.

Speaking to Daily Express US at Oxford University, Ms Pelosi added that the Democrats will “organize” to ensure Trump is defeated in November.

She said: “Trump has to lose the election, democracy is on the ballot. He is a threat to democracy and a threat to our allegiance to NATO.”

Ms Pelosi added: “He is not going to be President so let’s not worry about it. He will antagonise, we will organise to make sure that isn’t a possibility.”

Asked whether she fears Trump’s supporters could storm Capitol Hill again, as they did on January 6 2021, Ms Pelosi simply replied: “I certainly hope not.”

Trump has previously sparked controversy with his comments regarding the US and NATO.

In March, he said that he would not take the US out of NATO, but only if European allies start making good on their spending commitments.

In February, he caused anger when he said he would allow Russia to attack a NATO ally if that said member state had not met its defense spending targets.

The Joe Biden White House reacted to this by saying: “Encouraging invasions of our closest allies by murderous regimes is appalling and unhinged – and it endangers American national security, global stability, and our economy at home.”

Trump also sparked concerns for US democracy when he said he would act as a dictator on day one of his presidency should he return to the White House in 2025.

Sean Hannity of Fox News asked Trump in December 2023: “Under no circumstances, you are promising America tonight, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?”

Trump replied: “Except for day one.”
