'My sister had a miscarriage but she made me feel guilty for being pregnant'

A 22-year-old woman has dramatically asked for reassurance after being accused of being an “attention seeker”.

Kayla went to a family party which was put on to make her 25-year-old sister, Lia, feel better, a week after her unexpected miscarriage, the Reddit post on the Am I The A**hole subreddit explained.

Things had originally been going swimmingly, with Kayla’s sister “smiling and enjoying herself”. Kayla explained she was “staying away from the beer and vodka” and everyone seemed to be believing her “lies” about how she was “watching out for her health” despite her well-known liking for a tipple.

However, she explained things dramatically took a turn for the worse though when Lia’s friend Ash approached Kayla and demanded to know why she wasn’t drinking – ‘are you pregnant or something?’.

Kayla thought that her sister hadn’t noticed she wasn’t drinking, and Ash had deliberately told Lia. It was at this moment that Lia marched over.

Lia demanded that Kayla take a shot with her, but Kayla “turned her down”, saying she was just “happy to be in the moment with her”.

It was at this moment Lia looked at Kayla’s stomach with a pained expression on her face. After asking Kayla if she was pregnant, Kayla froze, which “basically must’ve confirmed what she was suspecting”.

After Lia burst into tears and loudly asked the question again, the “whole apartment” was now looking over to see what was unfolding. Lia gave Kayla a brutal ultimatum – drink the shot, or tell the truth about the pregnancy.

Kayla admitted she was pregnant, which unleashed Lia’s fury, who accused her of coming to the apartment to “boast” about the pregnancy, adding Kayla “always got what she wanted” and was “attention seeking”.

When the sisters’ dad got involved to calm things down, Kayla and her boyfriend left.

Kayla admitted that “people are more so leaning on Lia’s side” – including her mum, who said it was “wrong” to come “knowing I was pregnant”.

Lia is currently not talking to Kayla.

Commenters came with sympathy for Kayla’s tough situation, as one wrote: “It was a lose lose situation, you did absolutely the best you could. I wouldn’t take them siding with her to heart, in all reality, you’d “side” with her too, she’s hurting, people want to do whatever they can to support her.”

Another wrote: “

The easiest excuse for not drinking at a party is “I’m driving”. Unless you walked there? People need to stop making it their business to ensure that other people consume alcohol.

“And your sister needs to understand that the universe is not about her. You do not appear to have done anything to ‘boast’ about your pregnancy, you were discreet, and frankly, she behaved very badly. It’s true that the miscarriage is a very recent event, but, um, she’s having a party put on for her, and apparently enjoying it, which would tend to suggest that she is coping okay.”

However, one other Redditor pointed out the main issue with the whole situation wasn’t Kayla or Lia at all. They wrote: “If anyone is an [a**hole] here it’s your sister’s friend.

“It was not her place to escalate the situation. It’s perfectly fine to attend a social gathering without drinking.”
