‘My princess mother-in-law organised my wedding – and I didn't know anyone there’

Weddings can be a stressful affair. So who can even imagine what it’s like being a royal bride – with the eyes of the world on you, tantrums and real diamond tiaras.

One woman who knows all too well is actress Sophie Winkleman, 43, who shot to fame after playing Big Suze in Peep Show.

Now Lady Frederick Windsor, and the half sister of presenter Claudia Winkleman, has made a surprising confession about her own royal nuptials and her mother-in-law, Princess Michael of Kent, in a new interview.

She said “I do” to Lord Frederick Windsor, the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, in 2009 in the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace.

“I didn’t know anyone at my wedding. I had my best pals there but basically it was full of faces I’d never seen before,” she said in the interview with Tatler.

She added: “My mother-in-law, Princess Michael of Kent, took full personal charge of it all and did it brilliantly, including what dress I was wearing.”

Sophie added that she was “so determined not to be a bridezilla” and struggled to decide how to have her hair on the big day.

She said that she apologised to her soon to be husband when she saw him after walking up the aisle – to which he replied: “Yes, what on earth have you done?”.

In the interview Sophie also reveals how she and Freddie met – and it was all thanks to the character that she played on Peep Show.

She said that she met her husband, now 44, a banker who’s a second cousin of the King and 53rd in the line of succession to the throne, 17 years ago on New Year’s Eve in Soho.

The pair were leaving two different parties and tried to get into the same taxi before he said to her: “You’re Big Suze, I love you!”

Her mother in law, Princess Michael of Kent, is a member of the British Royal Family through her marriage to Prince Michael of Kent, the grandson of George V.

Born Baroness Marie-Christine Anna Agnes Hedwig Ida von Reibnitz, she was an interior designer before becoming an author and has written several books on European royalty.
