'My brother wanted to propose to his girlfriend at my wedding so I blackmailed him'

A woman who barred her beloved brother from hijacking her wedding day has turned to the internet to ask whether she has done the right thing.

A 27-year-old social media user with the nickname Infinite-Hotel-7837 took to Reddit’s popular community “Am I the a**hole?” to recall how her younger brother had planned to propose to his girlfriend during her wedding reception.

To stop the 24-year-old man from moving the spotlight from the newlyweds to himself, the bride-to-be decided to blackmail him before the nuptials.

The now-married woman, who said to have been brought up in a “very traditional Southern Baptist household”, wrote on Reddit: “He wanted to ask his girlfriend Sara to marry him at the reception during his speech welcoming my husband to the family.

“My dad passed away last year and I thought it would be good to have my brother do the honours. Thank God he told me his idea beforehand.

“My brother didn’t know that Sara, who is one of my best friends, had already told me that she was pregnant.

“My brother is a youth pastor at our church. Sara is the choir director. Everyone looks up to them.

“I told him that if he had the audacity to try and include himself in my day the response to his speech would be me toasting his new baby.

“He was furious that I knew about it. And that I would leverage it against him.

“I saw red. I said that if he and his girlfriend were willing to go against our beliefs then I had no problem calling him out.

“Our fight got loud enough that our mom came in to break it up. I kept my mouth shut despite wanting to blab right there and then.”

The brother, the newlywed said, decided against asking for his girlfriend’s hand during the reception but, rather, proposed privately after people had left the party.

The Redditor said that, without her brother hijacking the event, the nuptials went “without a hitch”.

Sara, she added, ended up thanking her for “convincing my dumb*** brother not to try and horn in on my day” and for her discretion.

After returning from her honeymoon, however, the social media user realised her brother was still angry at her, as he told her she had been “petty” to keep him from proposing and allowing Sara to have “a moment in the sun”.

Hundreds of fellow Redditors judged the situation, with many siding with the newlywed.

One social media user said: “Sara even thanked you for stopping him. He can stay salty.”

Another argued the brother didn’t “want ‘a’ moment in the sun, he wanted ‘your’ moment in the sun”.

A third praised both Sara and the Redditor, saying: “Seems like you have a solid sister-in-law.”
