Christmas, the season of giving. Households spend hundreds each year buying special presents for each other – but some gifts are better than others.
When it comes to opening an unwanted present, you may have to fake a smile or try to hold back laughter. However, one woman was less than impressed with her gift, and decided to break up with her boyfriend over it.
Taking to Reddit, the 28-year-old shared that she had bought her boyfriend and his 16-year-old daughter superb gifts, which they both loved. However, when it came to opening her present in return, she could not hide her disappointment.
Her now-ex-boyfriend had given her a small bottle of wine, and another crude gift which he claimed was “in his pants”. Devastated, the woman asked him to leave and took back the present she had gifted him, thanking him for the “worst Christmas”.
She then shared that she was sobbing after he left, upset about the thoughtlessness of his gift. “When he texted me if I was okay I broke up with him and blocked him”, she shared online.
The woman shared that it had been difficult for her to put in the effort to find a gift for her ex and his daughter, as she was dealing with moving house and had just started a new job. Despite this, she was still able to put aside the time to try and make their Christmas as special as possible.
The devastated ex-girlfriend had hosted the pair in her new home, despite it being a “mess” as she had just moved in. She explained the effort she had gone to make the holiday as special as possible, decorating the tree and buying food that her boyfriend liked.
She then shared that she had done her makeup to make “myself pretty for him”, however he ridiculed her makeup and Santa hat, saying that she looked like a “cartoon”. For his present, she had bought him some AirPods which he loved, and his daughter some gifts from Hot Topic.
Whilst at her house, he made little effort to get into the festive spirit, sitting down in front of the TV and giving her “zero affection”. He then gave her a small bottle of wine, marked at “3-5 USD at the 7-11”.
As an additional present, the man promised an “IOU” (I owe you), and his “boy parts”. She wrote that the gesture was “cheap” and “while I’m very sexual, it wasn’t sexy. I felt vulgar”.
After their breakup, she received messages from his siblings, who called her “materialistic and shallow”, and “said that not everyone has a fancy job and that I’m unfair for expecting a certain level of gifting”. Posting her story on Reddit, the woman asked other users if she was in the wrong for breaking up with him, but people were quick to shower her with support.
“He’s terrible. You know it. You have so much to offer, and you’re giving it all to a total jerk.” said one user. “If you stay with him, you will get more of this.”
Another said that his behaviour was part of a “long line of problems”, with someone adding that “I don’t even think this is about the gift. It’s about his lack of respect for you.”
