Mum's heartbreak after daughter and boyfriend, both 18, killed by 'drunk driver'

A mum has pleaded for justice after her teenage daughter and her boyfriend were killed in a car crash by an alleged drunk driver.

Stephanie Maze’s daughter Amelia Mazeikis and partner D’Shaun Tudela, both 18, were killed on June 10.

In an interview, Maze, of Chicago, USA, laid bare her heartbreak, describing how has “experienced no pain like this before”.

“I wake up and I break every single day, over and over again,” Maze told CBS Chicago.

It followed suspected drunk driver Deni Rubio pleading not guilty to two counts of reckless homicide, six counts of aggravated DUI, one count of attempting to disarm a police officer and one count of possession of cocaine.

The 32-year-old was on probation for firearms offences at the time of the deadly crash and prosecutors allege he was driving recklessly.

Mazeikis was driving Tudela to work shortly before 9am, when Rubio sped a red light and collided with their vehicle, according to investigators.

Police said Rubio’s blood alcohol level was at almost twice the legal limit.

After the collision, Rubio’s truck ended up in a ditch.

Prosecutors said he tried grabbing one police officer’s gun before nine officers were finally able to subdue him.

Maze said: “Whatever we can do to continue to fight for this beautiful person, I want to do it.

“She was the type of person who would win a competition – and then feel bad for the people that didn’t win, and want to give them her trophy.”
