Mrs McMahon, from Wellesley in Massachusetts, died from the flu on December 20 in what doctors have described as a “one-in-a-million” case. The mum-of-two, who was aged just 36, had no underlying health issues and was a passionate runner. Her brother Ian Meropol told American publication The Boston Globe Mrs McMahon had experienced breathing difficulties and was rushed to hospital. Despite doctors’ best efforts, she was tragically pronounced dead the same day.
A GoFundMe page set up to support Mrs McMahon’s family read: “Price Meropol McMahon passed away after complications from influenza on December 20. Price lived an incredible 36 years on this earth.
“Price was a loyal friend, a loving daughter, sister and aunt, but absolutely nothing compared to the love she had for her husband Jimmy and her children Rosie and James.”
The page described Mrs McMahon’s death as “untimely and unexpected”, noting that the past few days had been an “incredibly difficult time” for her family.
Since the page was established, donations have poured in from well-wishers with the fund exceeding its $100,000 goal by over $50,000.
It is unclear exactly what complications led to the death of Mrs McMahon.
The CDC reports that possible complications from influenza infection can range from sinus and ear infections to inflammation of the heart and respiratory failure.
Those at particular risk of flu-related complications include individuals over the age of 65 and children under the age of two.
Additionally, people that suffer from certain chronic health conditions, such as asthma or diabetes, are at an increased risk of developing serious complications.
