Mum shares innocent snap of daughter's bedroom and is accused of 'child neglect'

It can feel like no matter what you post online, there are always enough people who want to criticise you that you can get cancelled for something that seems completely innocent.

That was the case for a mum who found herself the target of a storm of critiques after she posted a picture of her daughter’s bedroom.

The Australian mum shared the pic of the pink room in order to share her cupcake inspired feature wall – but rather than be impressed with her artwork, many commenters felt the picture was indicative of horrendous “neglect”.

This was because her daughter’s mattress was on the floor rather than on a bed frame.

Shocked that her seemingly innocent post had received such negative attention, mum April tried to defend her parenting, only to be met with more backlash.

April explained that she had set the bedroom up “Montessori” style, with the bed on the floor to allow her daughter room to move about and use her imagination while playing.

She also pointed out that her child rarely sleeps on the mattress, usually preferring to co-sleep with her mum, and mainly use the room for naps or play.

However, this was not enough to silence the bedroom critics of Facebook.

Some accused April of “neglect” while others thought she was putting her daughter’s health at risk by having the mattress on the floor, as it wouldn’t get enough ventilation there.

One person commented: “It needs to be on a base, its a disgusting breeding ground for mould and bacteria.”

As the negativity continued to pour in, the mum updated the post to let people know that the mattress was, in fact, on top of slats.

She added: “We are very minimalistic people and use this mattress throughout the day for alternative things. Floor beds are extremely common around the world and just because in the western world it isn’t the norm doesn’t mean it’s wrong.”

She continued: “If you would like to call the department of child services on me for having a completely safe bed for my child tag me and I will give you my details because this is very clearly not a neglected child’s bedroom.

“Stop being mean because it literally isn’t affecting me at all, and you are making yourself look silly.”

But several people joined the discussion to defend her and share messages of support for the mum following her update.

One wrote: “Absolutely gorgeous room. I often want to put our own mattress on the floor with my first child and have the same Montessori style bed. You have done a wonderful job.”

A second replied: “Mumma you don’t need to explain what type of bed your daughter is sleeping on its none of ANYONE’S business – the wall looks great and what’s more important is that you and your daughter like it.”
