Mum dies after plummeting 500ft off cliff in the Alps during hike with friend

A mum-of-two who was an experienced mountaineer has died after falling 500 feet off a cliff in the Alps.

Giulia Pozzebon was hiking with a friend on Monte Limidario, on the Italian-Swiss border when bad weather struck the pair at a high altitude on Friday 4 August.

Ms Pozzebon had a devastating slip and fell to her death, according to local media reports.

Hailing from Albissola Marina in the northwestern coastal Italian region of Liguria, Giulia was on holiday in Switzerland with her husband and two children at the time of the accident.

The experienced mountaineer was at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters with her unnamed friend when the weather suddenly changed at around 6.30 pm.

The fall occurred on the Italian side of the mountain, and her body was later recovered by rescuers and taken to Santa Maria Maggiore, according to local reports.

Ms Pozzebon was a resident of Milan, where she served as a coordinator of educational services, and was originally from Merate in the northern Italian region of Lombardy.

Her father, Luigi, is also an enthusiast of mountain activities, currently managing the Bertacchi refuge in the Italian Alps. Their family is renowned for their mountaineering expertise and is well-regarded within the local hiking community.

Last seen on June 22nd on the Eiger Trail in the Grindelwald area of the Bernese Alps, Mr Roche was expected to return home two days later.

The solo traveller had arranged to meet a person he had met the previous night for a drink after completing the day’s trek.

In texts, Aidan said: “Hello, hello I should be in Grindelwald in about two hours. I’m still pretty high, I’ll see you back at camp.”

The experienced hiker also sent a picture of his location with the message at 1.07pm but was then never heard from again.
