Mum and daughter 'forced to sleep at bus stops' as they lose their home

A mum and daughter have been left sleeping at bus stops and on concrete floors after becoming homeless.

Jeanette Tagoe said she had to leave her home in Toxteth, Merseyside, after being unable to pay her rent during the Cost of Living Crisis.

The 55-year-old said her and daughter Kayla, aged 20, have been sleeping rough, couch surfing and begging for food.

Jeanette, who suffers from Raynaud’s disease and depression, said she had been living on the streets since January, and described her situation as “mental torture”.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo she said: “I had to leave my home as the rent was sky high. There were rats there and everything.

“It has been appalling, we have both had chest infections, and I have not been able to eat, or sleep. We have been sleeping at bus stops or anywhere to get away from the rain.”

She told the Echo her mental health was going “through the roof” and that some days she went without food.

Jeanette said: “My daughter has panic attacks and anxiety, she has lost so much weight.

“We are both so depressed with it all. We are vulnerable women on the street, it is scary.”

Jeanette says she has reached out to Liverpool City Council’s Housing Options Service, but claims she has been told she is not a priority because her daughter is over 18.

She added: “I’m getting pushed from pillar to post and we are two vulnerable women. There just seems to be nobody who is willing to help us.”

A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said: “We can’t go into specific details of individual cases for reasons of confidentiality.

“However, we can confirm that we have been in frequent contact with Ms Tagoe to offer advice, support, and guidance to assist her to secure new accommodation, and will continue to do so.”
