A mum and her teenage ex-boyfriend have been charged in connection with the death of her baby boy.
Carl Alesbrook, 18, from the Derbyshire town of Matlock, has been charged with four-month-old Elijah Shemwell’s murder as well as inflicting grievous bodily harm to him.
The baby’s mother India Shemwell, 22, from Derby, has been charged with cruelty to a person under 16.
Police were called to an address in Acorn Drive, Belper, just before 10.50pm on January 2, 2022 following a report that a young baby was in cardiac arrest.
Elijah was rushed to hospital by ambulance but died on January 5.
Carl Alesbrook and Elijah’s mother India Shemwell were in a relationship at the time of Elijah’s death.
Shemwell has been released on police bail. Alesbrook has been remanded in police custody.

Alesbrook is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday, September 26).
