M&S sparks outrage with new product branded an insult to Spain

A new product launched by M&S has been dubbed a “crime against Spanish cuisine” as people slam the new release.

M&S have released a new item called ‘Spanish chorizo paella croquetas’ which combines chorizo with the classic Spanish dish paella.

But Spanish nationals have called this a “crime”, saying the two should never be mixed.

Spanish croquetas are made with a bechamel sauce, rolled in breadcrumbs and then fried. Traditionally, the fillings come from whatever leftovers the chef has lying around in the kitchen, such as ham, chicken or cod.

Olive Press journalist Simon Hunter posted a picture of the new item on social media platform X, with the caption: “NO NO NO”.

One person responded: “Let’s summon the ambassador of the country whose inhabitants have perpetrated such an outrage.”

Another said: “This could cause a diplomatic conflict!”

This isn’t the first time the combination has caused controversy, with Jamie Oliver being ridiculed online in 2016 for his chorizo paella recipe.

An “abomination” wrote one user on Twitter at the time. “That thing ain’t paella,” wrote another, with the inclusion of chorizo proving particularly controversial.
