Mother causes a stir after admitting to preparing school sandwiches in five-week batches

A mother has caused a stir online after admitting she makes five-week batches of sandwiches for her child in one go by freezing them. Elise shared how she prepares a giant batch of 27 sandwiches for her child to take to school so that she has more time in the morning.

She stores the sandwiches in the freezer and lets them defrost overnight before adding them to her child’s lunchbox.

However, her time-saving technique has not gone down well with some social media users who raised concerns about soggy bread, frozen fillings, and whether the sandwiches taste “funny.”

Her hack went viral after she shared it to a popular Facebook group – but she was soon forced to defend it.

The mother wrote: “Just to be clear; I don’t expect my child to eat soggy sandwiches. They defrost well overnight.

“I also don’t expect my child to eat frozen sandwiches. They are defrosted the night before.”

She shared an image of the food in which the sandwiches are wrapped in plastic and ready to be frozen.

In the comments, Elise said the key to preventing the bread from turning soggy is to “use foods with a low water content”, so lettuce and cucumber should be avoided until after they’ve been defrosted.

Elise said she also lets her child choose the filling, and in the past, she’s made sandwiches with corned beef, cold roast lamb, poached chicken, and cheese.

Several parents raised their concerns about the food.

One commented: “I didn’t realise ham was safe to freeze and eat defrosted.”

Another questioned her: “Is the bread soggy or does it still taste fresh?.”

However, there were many who were able to relate with Elise and said that the tip “works well” and their parents used to do the same when they were young.

One mum wrote: “I have about a three-week supply of sandwiches as I have three kids and a hubby as well. It works great.

“I make sure I go to the bakery and buy my bread fresh and do it on the day! No complaints here from anyone!”
