Vladimir Putin’s Russia is facing the ‘worst labour shortage in decades’ sparked by a mass exodus of citizens fleeing the country after the disastrous invasion of Ukraine.
According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) the Russian Central Bank surveyed 14,000 employers and found that the number of available employees was at its lowest since 1998.
In three years the population of the nation has plummeted by a staggering two million people with the effects of the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine both blamed by the MoD.
The majority, 1.2 million Russians, left their homeland after the start of Putin’s ill-fated decision to invade his neighbours in February 2022.
Many of those leaving the country were well-educated people in high-value industries, the MoD intelligence report posted on Twitter says.
It reads: “The Russian Ministry of Communications said that about 10 percent (100,000) of the IT workforce left the country in 2022 and did not return.
“Mobilisation, historically high emigration, and an ageing and shrinking population is limiting the labour supply.
“This will likely lead to a reduction in the potential growth of the Russian economy and risks stoking inflation.”
