MORE than a third of mental health hospitals are considered by a regulator to be not up to scratch, the Express can reveal.
Analysis of 240 mental health institutions shows that 10 have been given the Care Quality Commission’s lowest possible rating of “inadequate”.
Some 73 were rated “requires improvement” based on the standard of care delivered, the safety of patients, the effectiveness of treatment and the responsiveness of staff.
An inadequate rating is given when the service is “performing badly” and the CQC has “taken action” against the operator.
Just over half (58%) were rated “good” and a mere 14 facilities were given the top rating of “outstanding”.
Research by mental health charity Mind shows 35% of people do not have confidence that a loved one would be safe if they needed mental health care in a hospital setting.
A similar proportion lacked confidence that a mental health hospital would treat a loved one with respect or compassion.
