Moment shopping centre is hammered with water as main bursts flooding huge area

Shoppers were seen desperately trying to escape after a burst water pipe led to a shopping centre being sprayed with water.

A construction worker was said to have accidentally pierced the pipe during ongoing work on Fargate in Sheffield – causing gallons of water to cascade into the air.

Video footage shows the moment water is sprayed directly at Boots, as shoppers attempt to leave the shop and escape the flooding.

Yorkshire Water told local media that they were contacted by the contractors on the site, who requested assistance after the pipe was burst.

Yorkshire Water have also confirmed that repair teams were on the way to stop the burst pipe.

A number of buildings in the area are said to have lost water supply.

Early reports have also suggested that some local premises are now without toilet facilities.

The Boots store has been closed while cleaners deal with the flooding, advising customers it can only offer prescriptions.

The Benjamin Huntsman pub in the area has also been forced to close. In the window, the pub displayed a sign reading “pub is shut due to no running water”.

Writing on social media platform X, local Ollie Potts said: “From natural to man-made flooding! A burst water pipe is causing chaos in Fargate as about 100 people are stuck, surrounded by half a foot of fast flowing water.”

Pictures show shoppers lined up against shops as they try to avoid the ongoing stream of water.
