Moment low-flying Spitfire skims past excited crowd at nail-biting angle

A low-flying aircraft, thought to be a Spitfire, was filmed skimming past an extremely excited crowd.

In the clip, posted on X, formerly Twitter, a good 30 people are running around at the top of a steep hill to get the perfect view of the incoming fighter plane.

Dramatically captioned “sound on”, the plane comes swooping in at a worrying angle, before straightening up.

At one moment, the crowd feared a bird was about to fly into the onrushing vehicle, but it luckily stayed out the way.

Soon after, everyone is frantically waving with arms outstretched to the sky as it swoops narrowly over their heads, wobbling all the way through.

All the while, a remarkable deep engine noise is whirring, sharply broken up by the chopping propeller.

The plane whooshes past and out over the sea, presumably into the EU to settle some business.

Viewers of the clip were full of praise, with one saying “great sound”, and other calling it a “gorgeous plane”, adding “may they fly forever”.

@huscarl1066 was keen to point out that it is “quite a regular sound here in Biggin Hill”, where there is a private airport.

@DjMurty amusingly pointed out that it was a “bit like that scene in Reach for the Sky where old Dogsbody beat up the field!”

Finally, Harry Hump asked the question on everyone’s lips: “was there ever a more recognisable sound?”

The Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter jet which was used before, during and after World War Two.

Around 70 Spitfires are still able to fly in the sky, and they are hugely popular among planespotters.

A huge part of their history was their manufacturing at Castle Bromwich in Birmingham, while they were hugely important in the Battle of Britain. A total of 529 enemy aircraft were shot down by the Spitfires during the battle.

Most historians agree that Germany’s air force invasion of Britain failed simply because Britain’s air force was superior – although German mistakes were also a contribution.
