Moment ex-Premier League striker crashes Land Rover into Co-op leaving £32,000 bill

An ex-Premier League striker who crashed his Land Rover into a Co-op in a horror accident last November has been banned from driving for two years. Danny Graham, 37, crashed into the Co-op Village Store in Teesside on November 4, 2022.

After Mr Graham was arrested, tests at the local hospital showed he had a reading of 230mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, nearly three times the legal limit of 80mg.

Mr Graham appeared at Teesside Magistrates Court last week where he admitted a single charge of drink-driving.

Following his appearance in court, Mr Graham was disqualified from driving for two years, given a 12-month community order under which he must carry out 180 hours of unpaid work and given a 90-day alcohol ban.

Mr Graham has been told his driving ban could be reduced by three months if he completes a driver rehabilitation course. He must also pay costs of £199. CCTV footage released of the accident shows just how violent Mr Graham’s crash was.

The images show the car smashing through the front of the shop, sending the door flying away as the force of the car displaced it from its hinges.

The magistrates were told heard how stock worth more than £5,000 was damaged in the accident and that the total loss was estimated to be around £32,000.

Michael Lawson, prosecuting said following the accident the shop had to be closed for five days whilst the damage was repaired, and stock replenished; no employees were hurt in the accident.

Mr Graham was told by Chairman of the Bench Nigel Guerin he would be jailed if he was seen flouting the driving ban. He said: “You are a well-known person and a lot of people in Wynyard will know you.

“If you get behind the wheel of a car, I’m sure someone will get in touch with the police.”

Mr Graham also has to wear an alcohol tag. He was told it would detect the presence of alcohol even if Mr Graham had a small glass of sherry.

A probation report said Mr Graham, a married father of three, had been drinking with a friend after playing golf. He reportedly estimated he had drunk between “five and 10 pints”.

The report added that he had intended to get a taxi home, but does not know why he didn’t, and that he cannot remember the accident.

Choi Chen, defending, said: “Mr Graham is very apologetic and deeply remorseful for this offence.

“Mr Graham, due to this unwise incident, experienced many things which he would never, ever, want to experience again. The offence dates back to November and he has had this worry hanging over his head for five months.”

Mr Cheng said Mr Graham had never been arrested before and was of previous good character. He added that he had handed over a “most impressive set of character references” to the magistrates.

Mr Graham formerly played for Premier League sides Swansea City and Sunderland. He retired from professional football in 2021.
