Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah was at the centre of attention among fans on social media after helping the Reds to victory over Newcastle United on Monday night. The Egyptian winger was at his brilliant best as he chipped in with two goals and an assist in his final match before heading off to represent his country at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salah’s match-winning performance was the latest in a string of influential showings for Liverpool, who kept the pace up at the top of the Premier League table as a result of their 4-2 victory. However, he managed to spark a debate on social media for a very different reason due to his unique hairstyle.
The 31-year-old’s long locks and receding hairline caught the eye of many viewers, with @oliveyches posting on X: “Salah is full on rocking the Krusty the Clown haircut. Just accept your fate man and get the clippers out.” @JCourier1, meanwhile, added: “Salah looks like Krusty the Clown with hair grown out while going bald.”
Others compared Salah to another famous Simpsons character known for his wild hairstyle, with @aliUTD__ saying: “What a pass by Salah, shame he looks like Sideshow Bob.”
Salah got off to a difficult start against Newcastle, missing a first-half penalty with a rushed effort that was easily parried away by Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. He went on to make amends four minutes after the break by firing Liverpool ahead with a simple finish after being played in by Darwin Nunez.
Curtis Jones then doubled Liverpool’s advantage by latching onto a Salah cross before finding the back of the net, with Cody Gakpo adding a third for the Reds shortly afterwards. Salah bagged his side’s fourth goal of the night from the penalty spot, making up for his earlier miss by sending Dubravka the wrong way in the closing minutes.
Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Salah in his post-match interview, saying: “Nobody should be really surprised that Mo can change a game or can improve in a game, because he’s done it hundreds of times. The more goals you have the more you are used to missing chances and understanding what you have to do to keep going and improving and that was what Mo did.
“The situation of the game, to bring the game in the right direction, was when Darwin squared the ball to Mo. I would say everyone in the stadium would have tried to hammer that goal, so it was incredible. It was a super game from start to finish.”
