A new trend is seeing those hankering after a taste of luxury living take over an entire castle for the night – and sometimes longer.
A new study says castle renting is particularly gaining traction among Millennials and Gen Z – which are people born between 1981 and 2010.
A spokesperson for Highland Titles which carried out the study said: “Whether to live out childhood dreams or experience a piece of history, people of all ages were interested in staying in a castle.
“Surprisingly, younger generations were more interested than others, as 90 percent of Gen Z and millennials wanted to rent a castle, compared to just 72 percent of baby boomers and 83 percent of Gen X.”
The study also found that it can be relatively affordable to hire out a fortress, with entire castles being rented out for £980 a night on average in the UK.
But if you’re on a budget a single room in a castle is much cheaper – at an average of £147 a night.
One airbnb host is currently offering to chance to rent their entire castle – which sleeps 16 – for £894 a night. This works out at just £55.87 per night per person.
Longs Park Castle in West Ashton, Wiltshire, boasts its own Rapunzel tower and has a drawing room, a library and a dining hall for up to 20 guests.
Its guests have been thrilled with the offering.
One airbnb reviewer said: “Totally unique, fantastic place perfect for a fun weekend away with friends.”
Another said: “A totally unique experience!
“This is a great place for a large group, with plenty of room for everyone – and for the kids to run around.
“We loved our stay here.”
The Highland Titles spokesperson added: “As with many specialty accommodations, we found that various options impacted the price of a castle vacation.
“Renting an entire castle from turret to drawbridge costs an average of $1,201 (£986.20) per night—surprisingly affordable for a castle of your own.
“However, that cost varied widely depending on the country.
“Entire castle rentals averaged just $892 (£732.47) per night in the U.S. and went all the way up to an average of $3,133 (£2572.66) per night in Italy.”
The study researched 274 castle listings on airbnb to learn what castles you can stay at, average costs and available amenities.
It also surveyed more than 1,000 residents US and UK residents about their castle vacation hopes.
