Millennial parents abandon traditional baby names for 'airy' options – full list

Millennial parents are abandoning traditional baby names and opting for more obscure “airy” options.

It comes as a new list of the most popular names for newborns revealed that names influenced by stormy weather have been making their way up the rankings.

Parenting platform BabyCentre revealed the top 100 names, with experts predicting names such as Storm, Gale, and Celeste will rise in popularity during 2024 along with tree-related names Hazel, Fern, Rowan, and Oakley.

Faye Mingo, a spokeswoman for BabyCentre, said an increase in extreme weather events was one of the factors leading parents to choose the names.

She said: “Both airy and earthy names are becoming more popular. Think Ariel, Aurora, Celeste and Electra for airy girls and Sky, Storm, Gale, Phoenix and Sol for boys. Coming back down to earth we expect to see more girls named Hazel, Savannah, Fern and Gaia and more boys called Oakley, Rowan, Forest and Heath.”
