Met Office weather maps show when the nation will be drenched by rain

New Met Office weather maps show when the United Kingdom will be washed out with rain on Wednesday, July 26.

Up to 50mm is expected in just a 24-hour period with low pressure coming in from across the Atlantic, reports the Mirror. It will bring lashings of rain that will start in the west and make its way across the country on Wednesday and into Thursday.

The Met Office maps show where the heaviest rain is expected. It appears this will be in the south coast, parts of Aberdeenshire and the northern tips of Scotland.

The wet weather looks as though it will start at 2pm. It should have made its way halfway across the country by 6pm.

By 11.45pm the whole of the British isles will see downpours, with the weather still unseasonable for late July.

Stephen Dixon from the Met Office told the Mirror: “In terms of rainfall, some places could see between 30 and 50mm of rainfall over a 24-hour period, looking most likely over higher ground in the west. So it’s a watch point, but not not something that we’re issuing anything (weather warnings) on at the moment.

“The main watch point through the week is that rain moving in on Wednesday, which could be high totals for some areas but we are just trying to determine when and where exactly that that might be.

“Those showers will be more frequent and heavier in in northern and eastern areas. I could see around 10 millimetres of rain in an hour.

“From Wednesday we’ve got a low pressure set out to the northwest of the UK. What this is doing is helping spread some weather fronts over the UK, bring some more persistent rain by Wednesday afternoon.

“So this will be a front of rain that will move from the west of the UK to the east, and they’ll be rain for the vast majority of UK through the day on Wednesday.”

The weather looks like it could remain unsettled after Wednesday too. Another gloomy front is expected into the weekend.

“I’m afraid if you’re hoping for some more settled weather for the weekend, we are looking at another low pressure system coming in on Friday. It’ll bring further periods of wind and rain into the weekend,” Mr Dixon added.

“We’ve got that increasing wind and rain on Friday and Saturday at the moment and though that rain on in the weekend is looking more showery in nature. Again, some of those could be heavy. So that’s that’s another thing we’re keeping an eye on in terms of any warning response.”

Although July will end under gloomy clouds, there is early hope August will be warmer and drier. Forecasters predict a “brief plume of hot air” will move over the UK – and potentially back bring the scorching temperatures experienced in June.
