Met Office verdict on monsoon hitting Britain with thunder, lightning and torrential rain

Rain and thunder are likely to hit areas across the UK at the start of July, the Met Office has predicted. A long-running heat streak is set to come to an end at the start of next month has a large weather front from the Atlantic rolls across the country.

Describing the conditions during the period as “broadly unsettled”, the weather agency said “most areas” will be hit with rain or showers.

The north will be the most affected, with thunder likely there and in the west of the UK.

But showers will affect all areas, bringing a climactic end to the powerful heat spell gripping the country.

Meanwhile weather maps show the cooler weather front moving in, accompanied by heavy rains.

The Met Office said: “To start this period conditions are likely to be broadly unsettled, with rain or showers affecting most areas.

“These could be heavy in places with the risk of thunder, the most intense likely in the north, and perhaps the west.”

It added that a few areas in the southeast “may be dry at first”, and this would be the most likely area to see “the best of any sunny spells.”

Things may settle towards the end of this period, however, although “showery interludes could affect any part of the country at times.”

As for temperature, which this weekend has sent the mercury up to 32C in some places, will return to average for most areas.

Looking to the week ahead, cooler temperatures will hit the northwest of the UK within a day, with the agency saying there will be “a much fresher feel” through the first half of this week.

Highs are currently expected to be around 24C, with lows lingering around 14C or 15C, according to the latest weather forecast.

Bursts of occasionally heavy rain has already hit Northern Ireland and are set to move across the rest of the country soon, hitting northwest and west Scotland first.

Writing for Netweather.tv, weather forecaster Terry Scholey said: “Towards South Wales and the South West, the rain will be lighter and more patchy, before it begins to turn somewhat cooler and fresher from the West. Top temperatures here 21 to 24C.”
