The Met Office has revealed whether or not a snow bomb could be on the way to the UK. According to new weather maps, Monday, February 5 could bring cooler temperatures and snowfall in some parts of the country.
The maps from WXCharts shows flurries falling as far south as London, with other cities like Manchester and Birmingham also at risk. Scotland, it claims, remains dry while the south west of England is drenched by torrential rain.
Exactly how much will lay remains to be seen. But the Met Office has dismissed rumours of a snow deluge at the start of February, instead warning it could come between February 9 and 23.
New weather maps show that February 10 could see much of the UK experiencing snowfall. The forecaster said: “Later in the month there is an increasing likelihood of winds from the north or east, which will increase the chance of some colder spells and perhaps snow.”
Tuesday 30 Jan – Thursday 8 Feb
“Cloud and outbreaks of rain gradually move northwards across the UK, favouring the west with heaviest rain in some far western and northern areas whilst some southern parts dry with sunnier spells. Through the remainder of the period, changeable with spells of rain at times, but also some drier, brighter interludes. The heaviest and most frequent rain will tend to be across north-western areas and accompanied by periods of strong winds. Further south and east settled periods are likely to be more prevalent, with the best of any sunshine and drier weather here. Temperatures are expected to be milder than average overall, although this doesn’t preclude shorter, colder spells at times, with a risk of overnight frost and fog accompanying more settled conditions.”
Friday 9 Feb – Friday 23 Feb
“Through the middle of February, changeable conditions are most likely with the wettest and windiest conditions in the north and northwest. It is likely to be drier further southeast, although some wet and windy spells are still possible here. Later in the month there is an increasing likelihood of winds from the north or east, which will increase the chance of some colder spells and perhaps snow”.
Ian Simpson, meteorologist at NetWeather, said: “The weather will start off fairly mild with variable cloud and mostly dry away from northern Scotland.
“But will increasingly turn cold and sunny with northerly winds and potential for some snow, particularly in northern Scotland, and widespread overnight frosts”.
He added that “cold air masses” are expected between February 5 and February 11.
Currently, there is an increased chance of cold spells across the UK compared to average temperatures for this time of year.
