Met Office sparks thundersnow fears as jet stream from US storm to see temperature plunge

A mix of wintry and stormy conditions could trigger rare bursts of thundersnow, according to the latest weather forecast. Unsettled weather is set to begin sweeping across the country today with the Met Office forecasting showers in southern areas and snow in many northern parts.

Yellow warnings for ice are in place across most of Scotland on Tuesday and Wednesday, with travel disruption likely as some roads and railways will be affected by the weather.

A yellow warning for rain covering parts of south-west England and Wales, including Plymouth and Cardiff, also comes into effect from 2am on Wednesday, lasting until 3pm.

Meanwhile, weather maps from WXCharts show large fronts of often torrential rain arriving from the Atlantic in several waves over the next few days. This is also expected to fall as snow in places.

This combination, resulting in part from the after-effects on the jet stream of Storm Elliott in North America, has sparked the possibility of thundersnow being witnessed in the British Isles yet again this month.
