Met Office issues yellow weather warnings for wind and rain as UK to be battered again

The Met Office has issued yet more weather warnings for wind and rain for the beginning of next week, just days after huge swathes of the UK were battered by Storm Kathleen.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for Scotland from midnight tonight, until 6pm on Tuesday (April 9), while a weather warning for wind was issued for the South West of the country from 6pm tomorrow until 6am on Tuesday.

The Met Office warned that the rain will develop overnight on Monday and roll into Tuesday before carrying over into the North Sea. They said that rainfall could “cause some transport disruption and damage to homes and businesses, via flooding”.

They said the rain could be “heavy and persistent with some areas seeing 20-40 mm of rain, and a slight chance one or two spots could see 50-60 mm”.

They added: “Given the saturated ground in this region following recent heavy rainfall, the rainfall totals quoted above have the potential to cause greater impacts than would be typical.”

In the south west, Cornwall and parts of Devon have been issued with a yellow warning for wind in place from 6pm on Monday evening until 6am on Tuesday morning. The Met Office said strong winds and large waves could cause some disruption to coastal areas.

They explained: “A spell of strong winds will affect this region from Monday evening until Tuesday morning.

“Gusts will reach 40-50 mph widely and as much as 60 or 70 mph along exposed coasts, most likely across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Large waves in combination with high tides may cause some impacts along coasts.”

Earlier this week, weather maps warned of another storm approaching from the West which would batter Britain in the same way Storm Kathleen had with high winds and possible disruption expected later this month.

April has seen the UK deal with a variety of mixed weather conditions from heavy rain to hot sun. The Met Office’s long range forecast suggest this trend could continue. Their forecast for April 11th April 20th said: “The ongoing unsettled spell of weather is likely to continue through to the middle of April.

“However, the focus for the rain and showers is expected to shift to western and northwestern parts of the UK. Here, rain could be heavy and prolonged at times, especially in upland areas. Further windy spells of weather are also likely, particularly in the north.

“Meanwhile, southern and eastern areas are likely to have some decent drier spells of weather with some good sunshine at times. Here, whilst some rain is still likely, this probably less heavy and much less frequent than recent weeks.”

The latest weather warnings come after Storm Kathleen wreaked havoc across parts of the UK with 70mph winds, cancelled flights, flood warnings, and power cuts.

Ahead of the storm, the Met Office issued a rare “danger to life” warning for seven regions and warned about the possibility of injuries “from flying debris” on Saturday.
