The Met Office has issued an urgent 18-hour weather warning for snow and ice in the UK tonight.

The yellow alert – which lasts form 5pm tonight until 11am tomorrow morning, covers six regions of Britain.

Residents of Yorkshire and Humber and the north east of England will be affected, as well as the Scottish regions of Highlands and Eilean Siar, Dumfries and Galloway, Lothian and Borders, Orkney and Shetland, and Central, Tayside and Fife.

A spokesperson for the Met Office added: “Wintry showers will lead to ice forming on untreated surfaces during Tuesday evening and overnight into Wednesday morning. Snow will begin to accumulate, especially away from windward coasts, with 1-3cm possible. Higher routes of northeast Scotland may see up to 5cm of snow accumulate.”
