Met Office issues urgent 15-hour warning for flood-hit areas as fresh chaos due to arrive

The Met Office has issued a 15-hour flood warning for dozens of areas today, with “disruptive rainfall” washing through the north.

The agency has issued alerts for dozens of areas across Scotland, many of which are yet to recover from last weekend’s deluge.

Flood-ravaged communities on the West Coast are yet to see significant relief from the record-breaking rainfall and will barely have the chance to prepare for the next round.

Met Office warnings commenced at 6am today, and the agency expects the risks posed by significant rainfall will last for more than half a day.

But, unlike the last round of alerts, the forecasters do not expect a “danger to life” from today’s inclement weather.

The Met Office heavy rainfall warning will last until 9pm today, for 15 hours in all.

During that time, the forecasters have told people to expect tricky driving conditions, road closures and public transport delays.

While there is no threat to life warning, the agency has said there is a “small chance” that homes and businesses could flood.

The forecast advises the “disruptive” rain won’t fall to the same extent as it did over the weekend but told people to expect more than an inch of water.

The warning states: “Following disruptive rainfall across much of Scotland in recent days, a further period of fairly heavy rainfall is likely to affect many western parts of Scotland during Tuesday (though nothing like the amount seen on Saturday), before the rain begins to clear away southwards during Tuesday afternoon and evening.

“Across many western areas 15 to 25mm (0.6 to one inch) of rain could fall quite widely, with peak totals of 40 to 50mm (1.5 to two inches) possible over and around the high ground.

“This may bring further impacts from flooding, including the disruption of travel, given the recent wet conditions.”

The Met Office warning currently covers three Scottish regions, with more than a dozen areas within them thought at risk.

They include:

Central, Tayside & Fife

– Falkirk

– Perth and Kinross

– Stirling

Highlands & Eilean Siar

– Highland

Strathclyde

– Argyll and Bute

– East Ayrshire

– East Dunbartonshire

– East Renfrewshire

– Glasgow

– Inverclyde

– North Ayrshire

– North Lanarkshire

– Renfrewshire

– South Lanarkshire

– West Dunbartonshire
