Met Office delivers verdict on snow this week with UK on alert

Clear spells across UK skies are allowing more “frost and fog” patches to develop towards the north and west of Britain.

The Met Office reports this weekend will turn “chilly” with “freezing fog patches” lingering. Although Sunday, January 7 will be mostly “dry and sunny” for the UK, there will be the odd shower for southeast and northeast England.

The weather experts reveal it is also turning “chilly” with the air feeling “colder than previous nights” as brisk winds develop in the south from next week.

This comes as the UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold weather alert from January 6 until January 9 and warned of a “brisk easterly wind” from the east.

According to Met Office weather maps, temperatures dropped below freezing in Katesbridge in Northern Ireland, with a recorded measure of -1.7C.

Overnight, temperatures in London will drop to 2C and Manchester will face brisk temperatures of 1C.

Long-range weather predictions forecasted by the Met Office also state the potential for snowfall.

The Met Office states: “Towards mid-month, the high will likely decline or reorientate itself to the west or northwest of the UK, potentially allowing colder air with snow showers to filter south across the UK or for frontal systems to approach from the southwest.”

It added there could be an unsettled outlook ahead: “The latter scenario would also bring the potential for significant snow and also perhaps some heavy rain to parts of the south. Either way a more unsettled outlook towards mid-month looks probable.”

As temperatures plummet, WX Charts show a high probability of snowfall across the UK with some parts of the Midlands expecting a 60 percent chance of snow while London will see close to a 50 percent chance of snowflakes at the start of next week.

The maps come as temperatures fall during the coldest part of the year at a time when thousands of homes are trying to limit heating usage because of the cost of living crisis.

Multiple call-outs have also been made across the UK, as the nation battled with Storm Henk.

Ahead of the fall in temperatures, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather alert that covers the whole of England from 9am on January 6 to January 9.
