Met Office amber alert in place for another 24 hours as heat and thunderstorms collide

The Met Office has put amber and yellow heat-health weather warnings in place for another 24 hours with the blistering weather set to collide with brutal thunderstorms. The amber warning has been issued for the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West and East of England, with a yellow warning in place for the North East, North West, London, and Yorkshire and the Humber. These warnings run until 9am tomorrow.

The latest weather forecast in relation to the heat for the next five days warns temperatures could once again surge beyond 30C today.

Tomorrow, very warm and humid air will shift across to the west, with temperatures continuing to remain above average for this time of the year.

The weather forecast states: “Another very warm or hot day is expected on Monday, with light winds and slow-moving showers scattered across England and Wales, heavy and locally thunder.

“Weather conditions will become more settled and drier from Tuesday onwards, with generally light winds and large amounts of sunshine.

“Temperatures are expected to remain above average both by day and by night through the period, with daytime maxima in the high 20s for most though trending slightly downwards.

“A few places may even exceed 30C on Monday, with a heat health alert currently in place.

“However, the return of easterly winds on Tuesday will see a shift of the very warm and humid air towards the west, meaning conditions are likely to become less uncomfortable for many in the east, with overnight temperatures widely in the low to mid-teens.

But separately, the Met Office has also issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for large parts of England and Wales for today, with up to 80mm of rain possibly drenching some areas in just a few hours.

The UK map has been dotted with yellow thunderstorm warnings that are in place for the East Midlands, East of England, London & South East England, North West England, South West England, Wales and the West Midlands.

These warnings, in place from noon until 9pm, warn of up to 30mm of rain being dumped on some areas of the country in an hour with the potential for 60-80 mm or more in a few hours where thunderstorms align for a time.

The Met Office has also warned in some affected areas, “frequent lightning and hail are likely to be additional hazards”.
