Mercedes worker dives into marina with metal detector to find colleague's wedding ring

A Mercedes worker dived into the marina at the Yas Marina Circuit on Tuesday in a desperate attempt to help a colleague find his lost wedding ring. The Silver Arrows were in attendance for the traditional post-season test, with George Russell and Frederik Vesti putting the W14 through its paces one last time.

A frantic search for the lost wedding ring took place after the session, with a Mercedes employee diving into the marina in a bid to help one of his team-mates. The diver was seen combing through the murky waters in pictures shared on X, formerly Twitter, and was said to have been armed with a metal detector and a sieve.

The team member who lost his wedding ring was thrown into the marina after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, as is often the case following the final race of the season. He was spotted looking on as the diver searched for the ring, which presumably slipped off his finger while he was in the water two days ago.

The search lasted for over an hour but failed to bear fruit as the ring was not found, according to Chris Medland. A knife was the only thing pulled out of the marina while the diver was in the water, with the metal detector playing up on two occasions before the search was called off for the evening.

More searches are expected to take place over the next few days after a local resident agreed to help the Mercedes worker in his bid to retrieve the ring. It remains to be seen if it will eventually be found, with all parties hoping to reach a positive outcome as quickly as possible.

It comes two days after Mercedes pipped Ferrari to confirm a second-placed finish in the Constructors’ Championship standings on the final day of the F1 season. There was little for them to celebrate after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, though, after failing to win a race all year long and finishing 451 points behind champions Red Bull.

Toto Wolff painted a bleak picture on Sunday as he outlined the scale of the challenge facing Mercedes next season, with Red Bull much stronger in virtually all areas as things stand.

“It is clear if you have a car like we have now, you are not at ease with it,” said Wolff. “Red Bull started the new regulations in 2022 with a massive advantage and they have been able to maintain it. We have a lot of respect for their achievements from the engineering side and the driver. Beating them under the current regulations is against the odds. Mount Everest is in front of us.”
