Meghan Markle's silence defended as Duchess in difficult position due to fierce backlash

Meghan Markle’s social media silence since the launch of her brand, American Riviera Orchard has been fiercely defended by a PR expert.

The Duchess of Sussex soft-launched her brand on March 14, but she’s not given any updates since.

Meghan’s brand is is thought to centre on lifestyle content and products which will reportedly sell all kinds of items from home decor to pet products.

The 42-year-old, who now lives in the US with Prince Harry and their two children, has been defended for not yet issuing an update due to a potential public backlash that she is likely to receive.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Andy Barr – a PR expert and owner of digital marketing agency www.10Yetis.co.uk, said that criticism is expected and that, whatever she does, it will be the “talking point of the internet for days”.

The expert added: “Meghan and her team will be caught in two minds, do they come back softly and play it safe, or do jump back onto the social stage with a bang?

“Very few social media accounts will be subject to as much scrutiny as hers so no matter what she does, there will be criticism. Our advice would always be, “be yourself”, and it would be no different in this case.”

Meghan has faced a lot of criticism as of late, particularly due to the timing of her brand’s release.

The date that the Duchess chose to soft-launch her brand – March 14 – fell on an important day for both Prince Harry and Prince William.

The estranged brothers both appeared at The Diana Legacy Awards at the Science Museum in London that evening.

Meghan’s launch came just a few hours before the Awards event and, like William, Harry also posed a virtual speech in honour of his late mother’s charity.

Meghan and Harry also received criticism over their statement following news of the Princess of Wales’s cancer diagnosis.

The couple shared a short statement just hours after Princess Kate shared an emotional video revealing that she was undergoing preventive chemotherapy for an undisclosed form of cancer.

Meghan and Harry’s statement, which was released by a spokesperson for the couple, read: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”

The couple have been feuding with the Royal Family for some time, particularly since making a decision to step down as senior working royals at the start of 2020.

Meghan and Harry now reside in California with Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two.
