Meghan Markle 'won't let Prince Harry ditch royal title' for one core reason

Losing Prince Harry’s royal title could “jeopardise” his status and therefore affect Meghan Markle’s royal title too, claims an American journalist.

Discussing Prince Harry obtaining an American citizenship was the topic of discussion on GB News, after the royal expressed an interest during his interview with Good Morning America while in Canada for an Invictus Games event.

Journalist Lee Cohen said: “I think Harry will likely never pursue American citizenship, even though he expressed in the interview that the thought has crossed his mind.”

He added: “Unlike Meghan who was US-born and able to accept her title through marriage. The title conflict arises if one has to go through the process of a US citizenship application.

“Why would he jeopardise the only status that makes Harry and his wife relevant and interesting?”

On the slopes of Whistler, Canada, for the One Day to Go Invictus Winter Games event 2023, the privacy-obsessed Prince Harry spoke about his move to California to the news channel, breaking his silence. Harry gave details on how events transpired from the moment he received the phone call from his father until he boarded the plane back to the US.

Speaking to Good Morning America the Duke of Sussex said he was “loving every single day” in the country as he chatted about his move across the pond, having announced he was “stepping down” as a senior royal in 2020.

Prince Harry told Good Morning America: “The American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but it’s not something that’s a high priority for me right now”.

However, speaking to GB News host, Nana Akua, Mr Cohen was not convinced Prince Harry would obtain citizenship overseas. Lee said: “I don’t think Meghan will let him do that, in case it affects her own status.”

In the interview aired on February 16, Prince Harry was the first royal to speak publicly to the press since the news of King Charles’s cancer diagnosis.

Harry added: “Look, I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him I’m grateful for that.”

The Duke of Sussex had returned from his quick dash to the UK where he was in the country for less than 25 hours, making a quick stop to Clarence House to see King Charles after his diagnosis issued in a statement by Buckingham Palace.

Meanwhile the Palace has released a video showing the many sentimental ‘get well’ cards issued to King Charles, with the previously admitting he has been “reduced to tears” by messages from well-wishers during a meeting with Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak earlier this week.

Harry and Meghan made a three-day visit to Vancouver, Canada, to meet participants and managers of the Winter Invictus Games 2025, as they prepare a new host of winter sports including skeleton bobsled.

Pictures from the track in Whistler show Harry sporting a white helmet as he speeds headfirst down the frozen track. He declared “everybody should do this” after hitting around 60mph on his first run.
