Meghan Markle warned of 'pitfalls' over Instagram return as expert pinpoints royal issue

Meghan Markle has been warned over the “pitfalls” of her much-speculated return to Instagram with an industry expert pointing to a key problem she must avoid at all costs – including linked to the British Royal Family.

Before she met Prince Harry in July 2016, Meghan was a regular on the popular social media platform, posting daily holiday snaps and sharing photos of her yoga poses and nights out with friends.

It has been more than three years since she made her last official Instagram post, while the joint royal account she had with Harry was deactivated in 2020 when they stepped back as senior working members of the British Royal Family.

Speculation is swirling that Meghan’s return to Instagram is imminent – a move that could make her millions of dollars. She has seemingly claimed the @meghan handle and although there are no posts yet, it already has 123,000 followers – including close friend Mandana Dayani.

But one entertainment and showbiz expert with more than 20 years of experience has warned the former actress must be extremely careful about what she posts and the negative backlash she might receive.

Mark Boardman, CEO of MarkMeets, told Daily Express US: “Meghan should carefully weigh the pros and cons of returning to Instagram.

“Her presence on the platform can be beneficial, allowing her to relaunch her career and share her life and projects on her own terms.

“However, she should be mindful of potential pitfalls, especially regarding comments on her posts. If she shares content that could be perceived as cryptic, egotistical, or overly focused on her royal past, it might attract negative attention.

“Meghan should maintain a clear purpose for her Instagram presence and remain selective about the content she shares, ensuring it aligns with her personal and professional goals although people will say she just wants to be famous and her haters will follow.

“So for Meghan, planning each post will be something that several people will need to decide to ensure the post, reel or story is the right one.”

Boardman believes Meghan could command a huge fee of around $500,000 with each post on Instagram, which could surge with stronger engagement and a follower count that surpasses one million people.

But he again urged the former actress to “exercise caution and select collaborations carefully” – including advice on not “appearing as if she’s capitalizing on her royal family fame”.

He continued: “Meghan’s rumored return to Instagram offers her a platform to voice her passions and promote her projects.

“With a verified and active account, Meghan could command a fee of around $500,000 per post, despite having a relatively low follower count, given her status as her own brand rather than a traditional influencer.

“The rate she can charge per post would increase with strong engagement and a follower count surpassing one million.

But Boardman warned: “However, it’s crucial for Meghan to exercise caution and select collaborations carefully, aligning with her image and values.

“It’s advisable for her not to include any royal titles in her bio and maintain a relatable image to avoid appearing as if she’s capitalizing on her royal family fame.”
