Meghan Markle could name royal who questioned Archie's skin colour if she pens a memoir

Megyn Kelly: Meghan Markle scared to be booed at Coronation

Meghan Markle could name the royal who questioned Prince Archie’s skin colour before he was born if she decides to release a tell-all memoir.

Royal aides fear that while there may be a Coronation “ceasefire”, it does not stop the Duchess of Sussex deciding at a later date to go into more detail into the remarks amid rumours of her planning her own autobiography, the Telegraph reports.

It comes as the Duchess of Sussex rejected claims made in the newspaper over the weekend that her lack of attendance at King Charles’s Coronation on May 6 was in relation to a series of correspondence between herself and the then-Prince of Wales where she expressed concerns about unconscious bias within the Royal Family.

A source from The Telegraph indicated that Meghan feels she has still not received a satisfactory response to her concerns, alluding to this as a reason for her skipping the Coronation.

However, the Duchess rebutted the claims, and a spokesperson for Meghan said: “The Duchess of Sussex is going about her life in the present, not thinking about correspondence from two years ago related to conversations from four years ago. Any suggestion otherwise is false and frankly ridiculous.”

The letters were sent in the wake of the March 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview, where Meghan had alleged that a member of the Royal Family had speculated about the colour of her unborn son’s skin.

The Telegraph had reported that Meghan’s letter was sent in response to a letter from Charles, in which he expressed his sadness over the split within the family.

The letters are also said to make clear the identity of the senior royal who made the comment, with both Meghan and Charles acknowledging the remark was not made maliciously, according to the paper.

In her interview with Oprah, the former actress claimed there had been several conversations within the Royal Family about how her son would look.

She explained how conversations were being had about how Archie, now three, would not be a prince or afforded royal protection.

“In the months when I was pregnant, all around the same time, so we have in tandem the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” Meghan told Oprah.

The host asked: “They were concerned that if he were too brown, that would be a problem. Are you saying that?”

The Duchess responded: “If that’s the assumption you’re making, I think that feels like a pretty safe one, which was really hard to understand, right?”

And now, amid talk of Meghan planning her own autobiography as part of her and Prince Harry’s four-book deal with Penguin Random House, royal aides could be anxious of the Duchess going into further detail around the exchange.

Naming the royal who made the comment could help booksales, the Telegraph suggests, if and when the time comes for Meghan to put pen to paper.

With just 10 days to go before the historic Coronation event, all eyes will be on the Duke of Sussex as he meets with members of the Royal Family for the first time since his bombshell autobiography, Spare, hit bookshelves in January.

Meanwhile, Meghan will remain in California with the couple’s two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, with Archie’s fourth birthday falling on the same day as the monumentous occasion in the UK.

And, with short time to go before Charles is crowned King in front of a global audience, Meghan has rebounded onto the scene with two public appearances in swift succession, after remaining largely silent in the public sphere for the best part of the year.

On Monday, Meghan appeared via video link to introduce her long-time friend and photographer, Misan Harriman, ahead of his Ted Talk speech.

The mother-of-two said she was “thrilled” to introduce the photographer, who has taken photos of Harry, Meghan and their family over the years.

Then, on Monday night, Prince Harry and Meghan were spotted at an NBA basketball game in California, treating staff within the couple’s charitable foundation, Archwell, and other members of their team, to a night out at the LA Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies game.
