Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's pals dub King's birthday snub as 'welcome distraction'

An insider close to the Duke and Duchess added: “They had not received any invitation and were unaware of any celebrations until the stories came out.

“I’m sure the Duke will find a way to reach out privately to wish His Majesty a happy birthday like he has always done.”

Last week the King and Queen Camilla embarked on a four-day visit to Kenya, their first trip to the Commonwealth country since they became monarchs.

Sources from the Royal Family and the Government have both made it clear the trip was a “resounding success”, as the question of reparations was once again raised at a state banquet held in honour of the royals.

King Charles gave an address at the dinner during which he expressed his sorrow and horror at the treatment of the Kenyan people during the period of British colonial rule, but he stopped short of making an official apology or offering to pay further reparations.

President William Ruto of Kenya however brought up the issue in his speech, during which he indicated hopes for more payments to be made.

It is currently British Government policy to avoid directly apologising for the impact of colonialism, and the King will naturally have had to respect their wishes.

One aide told Vanity Fair of the King and Queen’s visit: “Their Royal Highnesses thoroughly enjoyed the trip. I think it’s fair to say it has been a resounding success.

“There is a sense of relief that this went so well and a feeling that the King and Queen have hit the right notes.”

Highlights of the trip included a trip to an elephant sanctuary in Nairobi, where the King and Queen were delighted to meet the baby animals.
