A mayoral candidate has called for London Mayor Sadiq Khan to be sacked over the expansion of the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone).
Howard Cox took to X, formerly Twitter, to call for Mr Khan to be sacked from his job as Mayor of London.
He claimed Mr Khan lied about the science and that he manipulated a public consultation, however, Mr Cox did not supply any evidence for his claims.
Alongside his post, he included a screenshot of an Express.co.uk article about the ULEZ.
London’s ULEZ is due to be expanded on August 29 after a prolonged battle over its legality.
Mr Cox, the founder of the campaign group Fair Fuel UK, claimed: “Welcome to emperor @SadiqKhan’s #ulez backed by well-paid lawyers.
“He is free to lie about the science, fix the data, use false fatality figs, manipulate a public consultation, exclude 5000 opposing responses, and ignore two out of three opinions. He must be sacked.”
Mr Cox’s post comes just days after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was told he could block the expansion of the ULEZ.
The Telegraph reported that it was believed that the Prime Minister could have legal powers to block the expansion of the controversial scheme.
The power allegedly states that the Government can block a London mayor’s transport policy if it is “inconsistent with national policies”.
Following legal advice, it was reportedly concluded that the move would fail if it was attempted.
The expansion of the ULEZ has faced multiple hurdles since it was announced earlier this year.
Last month, the High Court ruled that the scheme, aimed at cleaning up London’s air, could go ahead.
The High Court dismissed a legal challenge by five Conservative Party-led councils.
In his verdict, Mr Justice Swift said the legal basis on which Sadiq Khan had made the decision was in line with previous decisions on charges in the capital such as the Congestion Charge.
Following his victory, Mr Khan said: “The decision to expand the ULEZ was very difficult and not something I took lightly and I continue to do everything possible to address any concerns Londoners may have.
“The ULEZ has already reduced toxic nitrogen dioxide air pollution by nearly half in central London and a fifth in inner London.”
Mr Khan added: “The coming expansion will see five million more Londoners being able to breathe cleaner air.
“I’ve been listening to Londoners throughout the ULEZ rollout, which is why from next week I am expanding the scrappage scheme to nearly a million families who receive child benefits and all small businesses with up to fifty employees.”
Not everyone agrees with Mr Khan, former Conservative Party leader Sir Ian Duncan Smith said: “The Government should intervene and demand that before this can go ahead.
“There must be overriding evidence that this would make a major and significant difference to the environment.”
