Mason Mount produced a classy moment following Manchester United’s agonising defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday. The Old Trafford faithful vented their anger as the final whistle confirmed a resounding 3-0 defeat and an early Carabao Cup exit, piling more pressure on under-fire manager Erik ten Hag.
Mount played the full 90 minutes as United were outworked and outclassed by a second-string Newcastle side on home turf. Miguel Almiron opened the scoring after a tremendous assist from Tino Livramento, and the Magpies didn’t look back from there.
Lewis Hall’s measured volley made it two before the break, and Joe Willock slotted past Andre Onana to complete the rout and cap off an impressive individual performance. Ten Hag’s side have now suffered back-to-back 3-0 defeats in front of their home fans, with Manchester City also running riot on Sunday.
And Mount was the only player to applaud all four corner of Old Trafford after the game, despite many of his team-mates slinking off to the dressing room and thousands of fans heading for the exits before full time.
Mount was one of many Red Devils stars that struggled to impose their game against the visitors, although Ten Hag spared him the embarrassment of being dragged off at half-time. That treatment was reserved for Casemiro, whose torrid first-half display set the tone on a miserable evening.
United have lost four of their last six games at Old Trafford, suffering consecutive 3-0 home defeats for the first time in over 60 years. Newcastle, meanwhile, notched their biggest win on the Red Devils’ stomping ground since 1930.
