Mason Greenwood was the subject of further hostile treatment from Osasuna supporters during Sunday’s thrilling La Liga clash. But the Manchester United loanee failed to strike back as Getafe succumbed to an entertaining 3-2 defeat at the Estadio El Sadar.
Greenwood’s debut after joining Getafe on a season-long loan on deadline day in the summer was marred by Osasuna fans chanting for him to “die”.
The 22-year-old forward emerged as a second-half substitute and played 25 minutes of a 3-2 victory at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, forcing the corner that produced the winning goal.
Getafe blasted the behaviour after full-time with a strong-worded, lengthy statement, leaving a sour note on his first appearance since January 2022.
Ahead of Sunday’s rematch, Osasuna manager Jagoba Arrasate condemned the ill-mannered chants towards Greenwood.
“Both chants are wrong. Greenwood is a great player and will surely come in handy for Getafe,” Arrasate said.
And while there was no repeat of death wished upon the former United No. 11, he was viciously jeered by the home crowd whenever he took possession of the ball.
Greenwood started the mid-table match-up but struggled to do his talking on the pitch as Osasuna moved within one point of Getafe with the win.
He fired three shots on target and had another blocked, missing one particularly good chance, and completed just 59 per cent of his passes.
The Bradford-born attacker was involved, taking 46 touches and drawing two fouls, but he was unsuccessful with half of his attempted dribbles and ground duels.
Osasuna led after nine minutes through Raul Garcia’s opener before Iker Munoz doubled the hosts’ lead later in the first half.
Getafe came out of half-time firing and struck level within four second-half minutes through Borja Mayoral and Nemanja Maksimovic.
