Manhattan bus crash leaves 18 people in hospital and more being treated by medics

A crash involving two buses in Manhattan, New York, left 18 people in hospital with another 63 set to be evaluated by medics.

The New York City Fire Department said it was called to East 23rd Street and 1st Avenue at around 7pm EDT to reports of a crash involving two buses, one of which was a double-decker.

Once at the scene, crews began trying to get the passengers out of the vehicles so they could be treated by medics.

Now FDNY officials have confirmed at least 18 people have been hurt in the incident, although none of them are said to have suffered any life-changing injuries.

They say injuries range from cuts and bruises to fractures.

Deputy chief Kevin Murphy from FDNY said: “A little after 7pm we got a call about a major vehicle accident right here in the intersection of 23rd and 1st Avenue. First two units arrived quickly to find two buses in what appeared to be a serious accident.

“[It was] complicated by the fact one of them was a double-decker bus. So the first two units went to work quickly removing those patients from the bus and starting the triage process and getting them out to EMS.”

While deputy chief Paul Hopper added: “The EMS operation has been going smoothly. We had a few minor challenges with the double-decker bus going through the windows and taking people out.

“There are a significant number of patients, many of which have already been moved to area hospitals. We have transported 18 patients – none have any life-threatening injuries.

“We are evaluating an additional 63 people. Both buses seem to have been occupied.
