Man Utd target Ivan Toney has already hinted at reason he would reject January move

Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Ivan Toney in the New Year to help ease the burden on Rasmus Hojlund, but the striker has already indicated where his allegiance lies. Despite a strong finish in the league last season, United’s main issue was finding the net on a regular basis.

Those woes have worsened this campaign with the club on the verge of a crisis with Erik ten Hag coming under increasing pressure. The club spent £72million on top target Hojlund in the summer to try and solve their striker issues.

The Denmark international has shown glimpses of his talents, but he’s very much a rough diamond that still needs time to find his feet at the club. United can’t afford to wait that long though and are reportedly considering a move for another striker in January with Toney named as one of the potential targets.

The Red Devils aren’t alone in showing an interest in Toney though, who is expected to push to leave Brentford in the New Year. And United may find themselves at the back of the queue if Toney’s past allegiances are anything to go by.

The England international spoke publicly for the first time since his football ban when he appeared on The Diary of a CEO podcast in August, where he spoke about a wide range of topics. One of the most eye-catching comments from Toney was when he hinted of his desire to move elsewhere, naming both Liverpool and Arsenal as clubs he has strong admiration for.

“The next club I go to, if I was to move, would be the right club,” Toney said on the Diary of a CEO podcast. “I’ve been a Liverpool fan my whole life, but from young I’ve liked Arsenal.

“I’ve liked watching Arsenal and how they play and how passionate their fans are. I’m a Liverpool boy at heart.” If Toney remains loyal to his “heart” then he may find it tough pulling on the United jersey as a boyhood Liverpool fan.
